Thank you for your interest.

We are exhibiting the official catalog of the exhibition "Matisse/Free Form" held at the National Museum of Modern Art in 2024.

Henri Matisse, one of the greatest masters of the 20th century, spent the latter part of his life in Nice, South of France, where he energetically created works using the technique of cutting colored paper with scissors called "cut-out". Through this technique, Matisse, in his own words, resolved the "eternal conflict between drawing and color" and pioneered a new artistic expression. This exhibition, focusing on Matisse's cut-out works, is the first of its kind in Japan, with full cooperation from the Matisse Museum in Nice, France, known for its significant collection of cut-out works. Visitors will have the opportunity to view a wide range of works spanning from Matisse's first oil paintings to the bold and vigorous color expressions of Fauvism, paintings of odalisques painted in Nice, ballet costumes, large-scale decorations, sculptures, ceramics, book illustrations, tapestries, and cut-out works. Additionally, the exhibition will showcase study works of stained glass and ceramic mural at the Vence Rosary Chapel, considered as Matisse's magnum opus, reenacting the interior space of the chapel with immersive visuals. -Excerpt from the greetings
