This piece is called Madonna, but originally the artist, Stan Langtwait, called it "Refugee," modeling it after a photograph he saw of a Korean War refugee. He saw in that image the mother figure that typifies of all races and creeds.
The beautiful earthiness of this piece (it uses ash from Mt St Helen’s depicts a Madonna who is one of us.
This Refugee/Madonna figure measures 10.75” H x 2.25” W (at the base). The piece is signed.
About the artist: While working as a logger Stan Langtwait molded figures out of mud and clay. He would make birds and animals and other shapes. He then placed these shapes on tree stumps to dry and collected them at the end of the day. Starting in the 1950s Langtwait used locally found clay to build a small empire. He created pottery known as "Shapes of Clay" at his factory in Graham, WA.
After the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 Stan incorporated ash from the mountain into his statues.
