[Story]
Summer vacation has begun. However, Masao (Yusuke Sekiguchi) has no parents, and his grandmother (Kazuko Yoshiyuki), who lives with him, is also busy with part-time work, so he has no one to play with.

So, relying only on a photo, he sets out to find his mother who works far away, clutching a picture diary and a small amount of pocket money. A concerned neighbor (Kayoko Kishimoto) orders Kikujiro (Takeshi Kitano), her husband who has nothing to do and is bored, to take Masao to his mother...

Kikujiro, who is selfish and hasn't grown up, ends up accompanying 9-year-old Masao on his journey to find his mother. The two "boys" encounter various people and incidents, experiencing the harshness of reality and the kindness of people during their journey of a few days.

Masao, who had only been following Kikujiro, who sometimes acts on a whim, eventually walks beside him, and finally, they start walking hand in hand.
