Purpose: Hair receivers were designed to collect loose hair removed from brushes and combs during daily grooming.
Usage: The collected hair, often containing natural oils and scents from hair treatments of the time, was stored inside the receiver via the hole in the lid.
Historical Significance: This saved hair could then be repurposed for various uses, such as stuffing small cushions (like pincushions, where the hair's oil helped lubricate pins), or creating "ratts" – small padded forms used to add volume and shape to elaborate Victorian hairstyles.
Materials & Design: They were commonly made from materials like porcelain, glass, or celluloid, and often came as part of a matching dresser set, including powder boxes or trinket dishes. The one pictured, with its delicate floral pattern and possibly gilt accents, showcases a classic design found in many antique examples.
