Rare vintage original etching print by Arthur Swartz of his famous but rare “Sad Clown/Melancholy Clown” series. So 1950s with hands in pockets, red nose, uneven pants. In great vintage shape. Dimensions 10.5” by 13.5”. The cardboard mat makes it 2.75” by 3.25” bigger. You could frame it with this cropping or do an original framing yourself. Arthur Swartz was a quiet artist who sketched as a side job but has been recognized after his death as a great American Folk Artist. Don’t know how many of these etching prints he made, but it appears not many. There’s hardly any recognized pricing for his works since so few are in existence and he never was commercial. There’s a sad happiness to this etching that’s captivating. Excellent vintage condition. Ruby Lane sells Swartz’s clown etchings for 6 times what is priced here. Arthur Swartz really had a passion for capturing the sad smile and unruly portraiture of the classic Circus Clown, circa 1940s-1950s. This is great American Folk Art.
